Head Guide / Back-Up Guide

Are you seeking an opportunity to become a part of our dedicated guiding team for the upcoming summer trekking season? Look no further!

About Us: We are a family-run business situated a short 30-minute drive from Taupo, offering an inviting and uplifting work environment. We take pride in caring for a herd of approximately 40 horses, with a primary focus on bush ponies, all of which have been started under our natural horsemanship approach.

Job Description: We are actively seeking an outgoing trekking guide for either the role of Head Guide or Back-Up Guide, depending on your level of experience. Your primary responsibilities will encompass leading groups of riders, ranging from beginners to seasoned equestrians, along our diverse trails, which vary in duration from 1 to 3 hours.

While prior horse experience is essential, trekking guide expertise is not mandatory. What is important to us is your ability to engage and instruct both children and adult guests, ensuring their safety, enjoyment, and education throughout their ride. You will be responsible for catching horses, getting horses ready for the day, teaching guests how to ride and manage their horses through a variety of situations and looking after and taking guests out on treks, including children as young as 3 years old. This role demands the versatility to work independently and as part of a close-knit team. We offer a casual position with flexible hours, which can be further tailored to suit the right candidate.

Role Responsibilities:

  • Guiding guests on trekking adventures.

  • Preparing horses for treks, including catching, feeding, grooming and tacking up horses.

  • Teaching guests how to ride and manage their horses through a variety of situations out on the treks.

Required Skills:

  • Confidence in riding and handling horses (high-level skill not required, but confidence is a must).

  • Exceptional interpersonal skills.

  • Eagerness and receptiveness to learning.

  • Strong communication capabilities.

  • A positive attitude and the ability to remain composed under pressure.

  • Adaptability to work in various weather conditions.

  • A sense of adventure and enjoy the chaos that comes with their job

Why Join Our Team?

  • An open learning environment with opportunities for growth in natural horsemanship.

  • The chance to boost your personal riding confidence and skills.

  • Access to shared accommodation if needed (separate from the main house).

  • Embrace our Whanau (family) environment.

  • Flexible days off (weekend availability required).

  • A fun and spirited workplace that appreciates a good sense of humour.
