FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Have a question? Check out our FAQs below. If you can’t find the answer you are looking for, feel free to contact us and we will help answer your question as soon as we can!

  • Get in touch to make a booking! We do not offer an online booking system as we like to tailor our rides and experiences to the group booking, so we would much rather talk to you in person to do this. You can book via phone call, text, email or Facebook & Instagram messenger. Liz, who does our bookings will happily book your ride and answer any questions you may have.

  • While we love the idea of spur of the moment decisions to come riding, we do generally require a booking in advance. We do not have exact times in the day that certain treks leave as this differs from day to day and we will get horses ready for the amount of riders booked in (we don’t have horses waiting around ‘just in case’). You are more than welcome to come say hi during business hours (9-3pm), but we can’t guarantee that we will be around base if we are out on treks. We advise you book in advance, and if it is the night before or the day of, give us a call to see what we have available. For busy periods, especially during the school holidays, we advise you book at least a week in advance to get the time and ride of your choice as we do book out during these periods.

  • We are located a short 10 minute drive from Tūrangi or a 40 minute drive from Taupo.

    You can find us at:

Korohe Horse Treks, 29 Keepa Rd, Tūrangi, New Zealand

  • Yes, we do have a weight limit in place which is set according to the best welfare of our horses.

Read more about our weight restrictions here.

  • Check out all our rides here. You can compare rides and see what experience level you think you might be. Still stuck on what ride to choose? Contact us and we will help you find the perfect ride!

  • We have a page dedicated to helping you work out your experience level, check it out here.

  • All our base treks are at a walking pace only. We have to ensure that all our rides are safe for everyone who has made the booking, as well as being fair on our horses. If you are an experienced rider you can book any of our rides at a faster pace, where you will have the opportunity to trot and canter. You will need to specify this at the time of booking.

  • Yep! You are welcome to bring your phone or camera to take photos during the ride. Please note that there are no opportunities to dismount during the trek to take any photos.

  • We recommend wearing comfortable clothing that you don’t mind getting a bit dirty in the outdoors. Long pants are more comfortable than shorts when riding a horse. Please wear enclosed shoes and in winter bring enough warm layers and / or wet weather clothing. For our swim with the horses ride, wear clothing that you don’t mind getting wet, shoes like sneakers that drain easily (rather than gumboots) are our go-to. We also recommend bringing a change of clothes for after the swim rides.

  • Yes, although this depends on the ride. Check out our rides to see the age restrictions.

  • Unfortunately this is not possible. Our guides take a lot of time matching up horses with the right rider to ensure the safest and most enjoyable ride for all our guests. We will match up the horse based on experience of the rider, age, height, weight and confidence level.

  • Unfortunately not, it gets very cold here in New Zealand in winter and the river would be too cold for both us humans and horses to go swimming. We still offer our regular 1 hour river ride as well as a 1.5 hour ride, just without the swim.

  • This is not a necessity, but we do recommend you bring someone with you that can speak English to help translate. We will need to be able to communicate some basic instructions on how to ride your horse, if no one in your group can speak English then we can still accommodate you on your ride, but it will be likely that your horses will be led along the trail for safety reasons.

  • Our NFS rides are typically private experiences (or semi-private during busy school holiday periods), ensuring you have your own dedicated guide for the ride. Additionally, our horses typically do not participate in any other rides on the same day after they've completed a NFS ride to give them time to rest.
